About the Library

The Jan Palach Library is a multi-purpose library which was established in 2010. It serves as a central library for basic study literature for undergraduate students (BA) at the CU FA and as a departmental library for selected institutes and departments. The library’s collections consist of: basic study literature for the fields represented at the CU FA, language textbooks and course books, general linguistics, theoretical and computational linguistics, Deaf Studies, Slavic philology, Baltic Studies, Caucasus Studies, Albanian Studies, Scandinavian Studies, Dutch Studies, Finnish Studies, African Studies, Film Studies and Theatre Studies. The library’s collection also includes all books and journals published by the Faculty of Arts Press.

Jan Palach Library is the largest faculty library, offering approximately 200 study places, outdoor seating in the courtyard, and one teamwork room. Computers, self-service multifunctional machines for printing, copying, and scanning, a special book scanner, and self-service kiosks for borrowing books are also available to users.

The library offers loans of tablets, e-readers and laptops (services available to CU FA students only; not intended for internship students or students and staff of other CU faculties). Guided tours of the library are available for those interested. Lockers are also available, as well as long-term rental lockers for PhD students.

We are located in the basement of the main building; the entrance is under the stairs to the left when facing the café (we also have barrier-free access).

The operation of the library is governed by the Circulation Rules and Regulations of the Faculty of Arts of Charles University.
