About the Library

The Department of Philosophy and Religious Studies Library focuses on philosophy, religious studies and related fields. In addition to study literature for the Department’s students, it offers specialised literature, especially in foreign languages, and sources intended for scientific research. It is, therefore, widely visited both by students and academics, as well as by the professional public.

In 2002, the reconstruction was completed, resulting in the library being one of the first in the faculty to have a secured collection. Wardrobes and work computers were placed in the vestibules. A two-story open shelves selection was created in the space behind the loan desk, where the books are arranged based on a specific, clear classification (you can find the classification in Czech on the Department’s website). In a glass bay window with a view of the Vltava River and Prague Castle, there is a study room with 12 study places and documents for in-house study, where you can find encyclopedias, collected writings, basic manuals or literature for state examinations or selected courses. Current copies of subscribed periodicals are also available here. The entire collection, including periodicals, can be found via the discovery service UKAŽ.

Part of the library collection is stored in the cabinets and classrooms on the floor in the local depository. On request or based on a reservation through the discovery service UKAŽ, we can prepare the books for pick up (during the semester, this option is determined by the ongoing teaching schedule). The library keeps old prints, some dating back to the beginning of the 17th century, for strictly in-house study.

One librarian manages the library; together with student assistants, they ensure the library’s opening hours and loan services and create a friendly study environment.
